Ruwantissa Abeyratne

The Road I Know

This road bends toward a place
I have not learned—
The cemetery that hums beyond the hibiscus wall.
They say there are others waiting there.
By dawn, we will be old friends,
Sharing stories by the root of time.

I must now yield to the laws
That moonlight and saltwater obey.
The cycle of nature without apology,
And I go with bare feet and a quiet soul.

When you return—
Take your brother’s favorite dish,
Place it warm by his side.
Tell him it is from the one
Who went ahead to know
What lies behind the morning.
