TRANSMISSION OF THE SACRED HEART

From the 2024 Collection "Sixteen Odes From a Toad's Repose"

There was on my property
an old gnarled stump,
it was weathered and hardened,
It was aesthetically pleasing as decor
but I decided to take it to a special place,
a place where the steep
mountain creek eddies and
there is an ambiance and calm.
I decided to dispose of it there.
I no longer wanted this stump.
In truth, it brought back
tired, exhausted memories.
So I decided to sacrifice it there
in those rushing waters.
The waters paced furiously,
an abundant snowpack
made for endless rapids
and I dropped the stump into the stream
thinking it would vanish in an instant,
but where it fell there was a downed branch
which held the stump in place
and pinned by the rush of the stream
bobbed up and down,
for many minutes pulsed rhythmically
in the tumult, in the furor.
Then the stump took on a new aspect,
I saw it was shaped like a human heart,
the stubs of branches were like arteries,
and being wet it had the glisten of blood.
And I knew this heart to be undying—
       I knew that heart,
       my heart,
       never ceases to beat.
