End of an Affair

"I became aware that our love was doomed; love had turned into a love affair with a beginning and an end. I could name the very moment when it had begun, and one day I knew I should be able to name the final hour."
Graham Greene

It is unfortunate, but truly this is the end
His fondest hope she’ll remain a friend
He grieves and feels a deep sense of loss
He’s got to be strong to carry this cross

But he can always look back at the memories
Of her hair blown by the sea breeze
Of happy occasions that they’ve shared
Of sunset walks and meals that she prepared

Of her faded jeans and yellow blouse
And the fact she’s afraid of a tiny mouse
Of the hang gliders they watched in the beach
And her gentle hands now out of reach

Somehow tomorrow will be a brand-new day
There will be myriad dragons to slay
And her memories will give him fortitude
To face life and the world’s multitude
