Singing a Song

By: Ezekiel Gonzales

As the curtains close and the crowd dips below
We see one another through the clothe
You wave, I shy away
I sang a song, a melodious tune entangled with you
The sound we made is one to listen for centuries
The sky descends, the moon and sun disperse

As I say that fateful “goodbye.”
Know that I have looked back, to wave
Yet all I saw was the man of yesterday
The bright lights from the lamps casted no shadow for you
Won’t you say, “hello.”

I sing our song, a distasteful tune
The curtain free from the rope, the crowd rises from the coop
The empty chair, the empty role
No one there to say, no one to see
A song that has died lingers in the crevices and cracks
The radio dances with the dust
The sun burns in fury, and the moon wanes in agony
