Ruwantissa Abeyratne

When I Die

When I pass from this world,
I wish to be greeted by celestial melodies,
A chorus of voices, tender and serene,
Whispering words of solace,
Assuring me that my time on earth
Was not spent in vain.

When I depart,
I long to hear from the angels, once forgotten,
Who crossed the path of my life,
Recounting the moments when I touched their hearts,
And how my kindness left an imprint.

When I leave this realm,
I yearn to feel enveloped by love,
Not for the essence of who I was,
But for the pure souls who surround me.

As I take my final breath,
I hope to hear that my existence
Bequeathed something of worth,
A legacy to those who remain,
To carry forth the ideals and the spirit
With which I believed we should live.

When I depart this mortal coil,
I hope to hear a voice declare,
I was but human, with all the flaws
That cut and bruised along the way,
Yet, through it all, I brought more joy
Than sorrow to the hearts I touched.
