Making Poems

I want to capture in the
    gentle cup of verses
the soul of life—-
           mine, yours,
  every living creature’s.

I want to make poems
    that unravel puzzles
at the same moment
    they cause the heart
         to break into
    a million questions.

I want to write
    with hands calloused
         from heart work
yet smooth enough
         to glide across
    rhyme and metaphor
like a darning needle
         skims the still
         brown glass
         of the pond.

I want to write while
    the globe spins
and seasons blend
    like wet paint
coloring the scenery
         of my stanzas—
the scansion
         of my soul.
