The Assurance

AH dearest dear, what do I hear?
   I’ve hurt thy feelings! have I, dearest?
Then let thy words be fiery swords,
  To punish me with pangs severest!

Than hear thee sigh, I’d rather die;
   Ay, were Death’s gruesome terrors
       doubled,—
I’d rather die than hear thee sigh,
   Or deem thy heart a moment troubled.
