Courage

Your breathing is thick
and your heart races;
your hands tremble,
but you have to face this.

With your eyes closed tight,
you try to calm.
No time to feel weak;
it’s time to stand strong.

You’re feeling alone,
like nobody’s there,
but you take a deep breath
and you rise from your chair.

You’re feeling unsteady
with both feet on the floor,
and as you open your eyes,
you start to feel unsure.

You’re taking a leap,
as you walk your first step;
letting go of the limits
that seat had set.

(2013)

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis almost 7 years ago when I was 16. Recently, I came across a poem I started a few years ago after rehabilitating from an exacerbation. It was incomplete, so I decided I would finish it and this is the end result.
